
BIOGRAPHY
Eric Yin YU is a Hong Kong-born classical guitarist currently based in Edinburgh. He is an active performer, guitar and ukulele teacher, and assistant conductor of the Edinburgh Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra. Eric’s musical journey has taken him around the world, from Hong Kong to the USA and now the UK.
Eric obtained his Master of Music in Guitar Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, USA, where he studied under David Leisner and Mark Delpriora. Prior to this, he earned a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Music from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014, and a Recital Diploma (ATCL in Guitar) in 2010 under the mentorship of Christopher Wong Man Kam.
Throughout his studies, Eric was privileged to perform in masterclasses with renowned guitarists such as Álvaro Pierri, David Russell, David Starobin, Oscar Ghiglia, Paul O’Dette, and Pepe Romero. In recognition of his musical achievements, he was awarded the HKSAR Government Talent Development Scholarship in 2014. Additionally, Eric was invited to give a lecture recital on guitar music, “From Pop to Classical,” at Lingnan University in Hong Kong in 2013.
Eric has also performed extensively in the Hong Kong music scene. In 2010, he joined Collegium Musicum Hong Kong (CMHK), where he participated in numerous concerts, including an opera production in collaboration with the Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing), and a European tour in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic in 2012. He also served as the principal player, coach, and coordinator for the HKBU Guitar Ensemble from 2012 to 2014, organizing concerts, masterclasses, and workshops with world-renowned artists such as Professor Adrian Walter, Professor Rene Izquierdo, and Samuel T. Klemke.
In 2014, Eric co-founded the Quartar Guitar Quartet in Hong Kong and continued to expand his influence in the local music scene. As a guitar tutor at the Hong Kong Music Institute and Lingnan University, he has taught classical, pop, and folk guitar music for over a decade.
In addition to his performance career, Eric is passionate about sports and photography, which help to expand his artistic expression and endurance. His diverse interests complement his musical practice and teaching, allowing him to bring a well-rounded perspective to his students and performances.
Currently, Eric is active in both teaching and performing in Edinburgh, contributing to the cultural life of the city through his work with the Edinburgh Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra and his own private teaching.
